Captain Matthias looks like your typical pirate captain. He has a commanding presence, and often inspires fear in others.
Powers:
Immortality. Matthias does not age, and he cannot be killed. No matter how badly his body is mutilated, he will come back to life a short time after he was killed.
Personality:
Matthias is a pirate to the core. He seeks to command a ship and seek out treasure, whether that is by raiding other ships, or raiding coastal towns. Despite his immortality, he prefers to avoid situations that could “kill” him, because it is very painful being dead and returning to life. Also, he doesn’t like others discovering his secret.
Background:
Matthias has been one with the sea since his youth. His grew up in a small coastal town in Scotland. When he was twelve, that town was attacked by pirates, and he was conscripted to service. Aside from his traumatic first experiences, he soon began to enjoy and relish the life of a pirate.
When Matthias was 40, he discovered the fabled Isla del Dios. He explored that island, avoiding its dragon guardian, searching for untold treasure. It was in a remote jungle of the island that he discovered a local witch named Sibelle. That witch spoke some archaic language, but what she did translate amounted to Matthias needing to play some sort of important role in the future of Kenos, and that he would no longer age or die.
Matthias ignored the witch and continued searching the island. The threat of being discovered by the dragon eventually forced Matthias to leave Isla del Dios behind, having nothing to show for it. A few months later, he was captured by the British Navy and his ship was sunk. He and his surviving crew were sentenced to hang on the gallows.
Hanging from the gallows, choking to death, was not a death that Matthias would forget. Even worse was waking up to find himself buried alive. He clawed his way out of his grave, and vowed to remain away from the sea. He opened up the Rusty Nail and planned to live out his days there. It wasn’t until Jas found him some time later that he returned to the sea he loved.
